The erotic products business is booming and Orion Versand GmbH & Co. KG is expanding its activities. However, Orion had a number of mundane problems to solve before fishnets, nail varnish and leather could liven up Germany’s bedrooms. Five problems to be precise. The solution: A network that would cater for all requirements.
First of all, the Flensburg-based erotic goods mail order company needed to replace its 14-year-old telephone system. The second issue was that Orion wanted to expand its high rack warehouse and equip it with the latest technology for MDEs (Mobile Data Entry devices). Thirdly, the company’s Internet link needed to be enhanced in response to the increasing number of Internet orders received. The new network also had to offer better connectivity to the in-house network for the company’s subsidiaries in Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, Norway and, at a later date, Spain. The ideal solution would be a new data processing structure in the existing offices at the company’s headquarters.
T-Systems helped the mail order company in the form of an international MPLS network that can transmit both voice and data using the Internet Protocol (IP). Alcatel provided all the hardware for networking within the sites in Flensburg and Padborg (Denmark), ensuring that there would be no adaptation problems from the outset. Orion personnel can now use the MDEs to send data to the central system via IP using the WLAN and can also use the units to make mobile calls (Voice over IP). This is the first time that mobile telephony and data applications have been integrated in a WLAN using MDE technology, something the mail order company finds really exciting. Andrea Bombrowski, Orion’s director of logistics and organization: “What more could we want? We use the same system throughout and our data security has been increased.”
