A

ADSL

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line employs an asymmetrical transmission method to enable high-speed data transfer via conventional, i.e. twisted-pair copper telephone lines. ADSL is particularly suitable for Internet access in which subscribers download large amounts of data from the Web but only upload relatively small amounts.

Data protection

Protection from misuse of personal information stored on electronic systems. The goal is to protect the rights (particularly rights to privacy) and fundamental freedoms of individuals with regard to automatic processing of their personal data.

DMS (= Document Management System)

A document management system is a database system used to track and store electronic documents. The term is often used for the management of originally paper-based documents by electronic means.

DSL

Digital Subscriber Line. A technology that provides mainly domestic users and small businesses with greater transmission bandwidths via conventional copper-wire telephone lines. See also ADSL.

B2B

Abbreviation for "Business to Business" - i.e. business relationships between two commercial enterprises.

BOS radio network (BOS = German public safety and security agencies)

BOS radio is a private, mobile, VHF terrestrial radio service in Germany, used by public safety and security agencies.

Billing Solutions

Billing is the business process that involves creating and sending invoices to customers. It is a periodic process (usually performed monthly), which takes on particular significance in industries that handle huge amounts of invoice data, such as telecommunications, the power supply and insurance sectors. Billing solutions are services that support and perform invoicing processes for enterprises.

EDGE

Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) is a technology used to increase data rates in GSM mobile telephony networks by introducing an additional modulation process. EDGE is an enhancement to GPRS to create E-GPRS (Enhanced GPRS) and of HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit Switched Data) to create ECSD (Enhanced Circuit Switched Data).

EDIFACT-Standard

Electronic Data Interchange For Administration Commerce and Transport (EDIFACT) is an electronic data interchange (EDI) standard that facilitates the electronic processing (in whole or part) of business transactions between enterprises from different industries and countries. The format is both hardware- and software-independent. EDIFACT messages are transmitted via standardized text files. The standard is maintained and developed by a UN agency. Cf. E-Government

Abbreviation for Electronic Government. An e-business application that supports electronic communications and collaboration with government agencies via the Internet or other networks (such as municipal networks), for the interactive handling of administration processes, for example. E-Government also includes electronic communications and collaboration between government bodies and comparable national institutions.

E-Health

The use of information and communication technologies to improve the provision of health services.

Electronic Health Card

An electronic health card contains a chip for storing personal data about a patient in addition to some medical data for emergency purposes.

Energy supplier

An energy supplier is a company that either generates electricity and distributes it via the public grid, or supplies natural gas or district heating.

Enterprise Mobility

Enterprise Mobility is a term used by T-Systems for a whole range of mobile ICT solutions designed for businesses, which support various types of mobility.

ERP

Enterprise Resource Planning encompasses planning, management and control across the value chain, with the goal of optimizing the deployment of resources for corporate processes. This task is facilitated by special ERP software.

Ethernet

Ethernet is a cable-based data-network technology for local-area networks (LANs). It enables data exchange between all devices connected to the LAN (computers, printers, etc.). While traditional Ethernet networks were restricted to a single building, the technology is now also used to connect devices across great distances.

CI/CD

Corporate Identity/Corporate Design. The Corporate Identity (CI) is the persona of a company – the corporate personality representing the totality of a company's characteristics. The idea behind a CI is that companies are perceived to have personalities and can act accordingly. A CI typically includes an organization's core culture and values, in-house vocabulary, and behavior guidelines. CI is closely associated with Corporate Design (CD), which defines the company's easily recognizable visual identity, e.g. in the form and use of logos, letterheads, standard layouts for brochures, etc.

CISCO

Cisco Systems Inc. is the world's largest network equipment manufacturer. The company is particularly well-known for its routers and switches, which form large sections of the Internet backbone.

City FCD (= Floating Car Data)

Floating car data is a technique used to transmit traffic information from and to vehicles on the road.

Corporate Governance

Corporate Governance guarantees that an enterprise is directed and controlled in a responsible, professional, and transparent manner with the purpose of safeguarding its long-term success. Corporate governance is intended to increase the confidence of shareholders and capital-market investors.

Corporate Network

Also termed Corporate Telecommunications Network (CTN), a Corporate Network is a telecommunications network that serves a restricted number of users, and is usually adapted to the needs of a company or group. Generally speaking, Corporate Networks differ from public telephone networks in terms of capabilities, services, billing, provision and management.

Corporate Voice Solutions

Corporate Voice Solutions is Deutsche Telekom's Virtual Private Network product. This is a set of made-to-measure, network-based voice solutions that enable businesses to operate a single, cross-location voice network without the cost of setting up their own infrastructure.

Flatrate

Pricing plans for telecommunications services – particularly telephony and Internet access – based on a fixed charge rather than on usage. Often in the form of a monthly fee for a contractually agreed service (e.g. transfer bandwidth, file volume). Exceeding the agreed ceiling incurs a higher charge.
